Epoxy floors are made from durable, tough floor coating that can be used to make garage floors, warehouses, sunroom floors, and even walkways. These are great for garages since heavy cars and machinery are usually used in this space. Since these floors are so durable, you do not have to worry about them using their luster. However, this only applies if you know how to clean an epoxy garage floor.
To clean debris and dust off epoxy garage floors, you need to carefully vacuum the space so that the flooring does not get scratched. Moreover, you must deep clean the garage with a biodegradable cleanser every three months. Use a cleaning solution along with a stiff nylon brush to remove any rust stains or other stubborn stains you may find.
Here are some ways to clean an epoxy garage floor to ensure that it does not rot over time or lose its shine:
1. Always Ensure that the Epoxy Garage Floor is Dirt Free
Regardless of how tough the floor seems, you must always keep it clean. This means that if your car is leaving behind loads of grit, you must clean the epoxy garage floor regularly. All you need is a soft dust mop to pick up all the loose debris. Depending on how much grit accumulates, you can do this twice or thrice a week.
You may find this complicated as grit particles are sometimes not visible to the naked eye. Sometimes, dirt particles get embedded in the epoxy floor, and over time, they destroy the beautiful coating. If you are not careful, you may have to get new flooring. This can result in a dent in your bank account as floorings can be extremely expensive.
If you don’t want to experience that, make sure to always keep the floor clean. You can also vacuum the epoxy garage floor using a soft brush attachment. This will gently help get rid of any sand or dirt without scratching the flooring or spoiling its wonderful polish. You can also use the vacuum hose with a crevice tool to get the grit out of the saw cuts. There is nothing more annoying than finding leftover dirt in the crevices.
If your floor has an anti-slip aggregate coating, like aluminum oxide, it is best to use a soft bristle push broom instead of a conventional dust mop.
In case you drop oil, chemicals, or even water on the epoxy garage floor, clean it up as soon as possible. If any of these materials are left for too long on the floor, they will lead to damage. Use a soft towel to wipe any spills. You can also use a gentle cleanser in case of a sticky spill.
2. Deep Clean Every Three Months
Alongside regularly cleaning an epoxy garage floor, you must also deep clean it three to four times a year. This will ensure that your floor is always in good shape and is not rotting underneath debris and dirt. This could be tiresome as you will have to get rid of all vehicles, tools, and other storage items kept in the garage.
You must find a biodegradable cleaning solution that is not toxic. If you cannot find this, you can even use ammonia to deep clean the epoxy garage floor. As long as you use the correct amount of water, both these cleansers will do wonders to your garage floor.
All you need to do is mix ½ a cup of your biodegradable cleaner with 1 gallon of water. Make sure that the solution is not over-concentrated as this can leave behind a film on the garage floor. If you are using ammonia, mix ½ a cup with 1 gallon of hot water. Put this solution in a bucket and keep another bucket of clean hot water nearby. Once you are done mopping the floor with the cleaning solution, go over the surface with clean water to get rid of any remaining detergent. Make sure to dry the floor using a towel.
3. Get Rid of Stains Using a Cleansing Solution and Stiff Nylon Brush
If you find any stubborn stains on the epoxy garage floor, all you have to do is use a stronger ratio of the cleaning solution to spray on the stains. You can then take a stiff nylon brush to scrub out any leftover stain. Once done, take some water to clean the area and dry it off with a soft towel.
If there are rust stains or film from road salt, take a lactic-acid-based cleanser and form a mixture. Use 1- part of the cleanser with 1-part warm water. Spray it directly onto the surface and start scrubbing with a scrub brush. Once done, rinse the mixture off with cold water. Remember, the mixture should not be left on the floor for more than two minutes.
You can use a concrete degreaser to get rid of any tire marks you find on the garage floor. All you have to do is saturate the surface with a degreasing cleanser and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Then, use a stiff nylon brush to get rid of any marks you find. If these do not disappear, use the cleanser on the surface again and repeat the step. Once you are satisfied, use some water to wash the area and then dry it with a soft towel.
